J. S. Bach in Oil Pastel
I've begun a portrait in pastel of J.S. Bach. I would like to get across a sense of universality because his music is revered for its intellectual depth, technical command, and artistic beauty. Even more than being a prolific composer, he was a servant above all, creating a monumental body of work while facing difficult life circumstances. The thing that I find most amazing about Bach was his lack of concern over fame and fortune, being mainly concerned with glorifying God through his music and toiling for the church as an organist and choir director.

Miss Detroit
Urban "Ben" Drew was famous for flying his P-51 Mustang "Detroit Miss" in the ETO during WWII. After completion of his European tour, Drew served with the 413th Fighter Squadron, 414th Fighter Group, flying P-47N-5s from Iwo Jima. I have chosen to depict his "Jug" being serviced on Iwo Jima in 1945. On another forum it was mentioned that Ben himself said that the aircraft was named "Miss Detroit", not "Detroit Miss II" which I originally thought. I'll most likely add some little tidbits of detail such as tools and things in the foreground. I will portray this same scene in oil pastel as well.

Six Shooter WIP in oil pastels
Here's a couple of "in-progress" shots of the Hellcat piece which is being rendered with oil pastels. Again, it was scanned on a small scanner so I always have to tile and piece the images together in photoshop and it can be a pain in the behind. One shot has the Hellcat from my acrylic sketch placed. As I did in the Spitfire piece, I placed it to help give me some perspective while progressing with the piece as a whole.

Spitfire in Pastel
Here is a section of the pastel piece I had mentioned some time back when I did the small acrylic study. I will post the entire image when I've had the chance to scan the entire piece in sections and put it together because I have a very small flatbed scanner. The piece is on Canson Me-Teintes pastel paper, 25" x 19".

Painted Rock Memorial
I just finished painting a rock which my father-in-law, Jim, had chosen off the beach from Newcastle. Sara and I used to love walking there, so he asked me to paint a shoreline on it with Sara's name on it and to place it in the garden. I'd been promising Jim that I would do it for months so I finally did it this past weekend. It will be placed beside the hosta that Sara had asked me to plant as well.

Breast Cancer Awareness Graphic Work
A couple of "experimental" design projects in my volunteer work for the CBCF to develop some concepts for use on their collateral material to be used for the fight against breast cancer. I hope they go with something in this direction because I feel these to be very communicative while they are also graphically strong. I will expand on these with more along these lines.

Bach Music Posters
A couple of graphic design ideas for music posters, one for Bach's Cantata BWV 67, the other for his Easter Oratorio, BWV 249. Each image has imagery and verbage pertinent to the themes of each cantata. The Cantata BWV 67 was composed for the first Sunday after Easter in 1724. His Easter Oratorio was composed in Leipzig and first performed on 1 April 1725. I am planning on building a body of this type of work.

Light My Fire
Another in my series of musicians portraits that I would like to complete with pastels. Jim Morrison was a poet and musician who possessed a bit of a brooding personality. He was a fiercely independent and free thinker who sought for ways to express himself through words and music. Pastel on Paper, 25.25" x 11".

Sara
Here is a pencil portrait of my wife. It was created for her parents in remembrance of Sara, who passed away on January 30, 2013. She will forever have a place in my heart. We enjoyed 22 years of togetherness in marriage and we have two wonderful children in whom a part of her will always live. I miss her terribly. They say that time heals all wounds and I hope that the pain of our loss will lessen with time. Rest in peace Sara.
