Bach, Casals and the Six Suites for Cello Solo
I promised Steven Hancoff that I would help promote his recording project of Bach's Cello Suites, which he transcribed for guitar. Steven shares a passion for Bach as a man and a person, but also his music. In addition to the cd recordings, Steven has had the opportunity to present his multi-media concert-length shows in Seattle, Vancouver and Victoria. He calls it: From Tragedy to Transcendence: Bach, Casals and the Six Suites for Cello Solo. It is the retelling of the life of Bach, the circumstances of his life when he created his masterpiece, his legacy, the role of the Mendelssohn family in saving his music, and Casals’ rediscovery and subsequent recording of the suites. The saga has also been told in his iBooks, which are available at the link on his website: According to Steve, audience reaction was astonishing and enthusiastic. My portrait of Bach appears in his ibook "Suite V - Discovery and Catharsis", Volumel 4, on page 42 and also in Volume 2 of the video Opus V, Contemporary Portraits of Johann Sebastien Bach, page 62. My portrait is one of hundreds used and I was only too happy to contribute to this amazing project. Steve has also produced some very interesting youtube videos that chronicle Bach's life. In Steve's words: "I have come to feel that this is the pre-eminent and most grand and by far the most profoundly serendipitous legend of Western culture. And the presentation is entertaining and enlightening. I hope to be touring with this show over the next few years.
